Painters, Drywall Finishers, & Glaziers
Painter-Decorators apply coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamels, and lacquers to protect interior and exterior surfaces, trims, and structures. They also prepare and cover interior walls and ceilings with finishes such as fabric, wallpaper, vinyl, and other materials. Drywall finishers perform taping, surfacing, and finishing of all drywall materials. Glaziers install metal framing, glass reflective panels, door glass, mirror glass, and plexiglass in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Working conditions may be indoors and outdoors, on ladders and scaffolds, and in confined spaces. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
Industrial Painters apply/install protective coatings and linings to steel and concrete on complex structures such as bridges and towers; identify and control corrosion; work in confined spaces such as shipboard spaces, small vessels, or storage tanks; and plan and stage proper rigging and containment.
JOURNEYMAN’S WAGE*
$41.00/hr

Painters and drywall finishers are represented by Painters District Council No. 30 in Boone, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties. Glaziers are represented in Boone, Dekalb, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties as well as Rock, Green and Walworth counties in Wisconsin.
Apprenticeship Information: Four different trades offered through the apprenticeship program (commercial painting-decorating, industrial painting, glazing and drywall finishing, all of which are three-year programs. Every student is required to participate in and complete the three-year program, which consists of 160 hours of technical classroom instruction per year. Additionally, students must also work over 4,650 hours for their employer over those three years, which equates to about 30 hours per week.
Wages and Benefits: Wages begin at 55% of the Journey Worker wage rate in the first year of apprenticeship (increasing to 70% in year two and 80% in year three). Benefits include health & welfare (medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage), pension, and a retirement savings plan (401K benefit).
